Our Mission:
The mission of The Living Word Outdoor Drama is to communicate and offer the Gospel of Jesus Christ through the production of an outdoor drama – Ohio’s ONLY Outdoor Passion Play – and other wholesome family productions, increase the experience of live theater, and assist the economic development of the local community throughout travel and tourism in Ohio.
Our Goal: Our educational goal is first, the Bible and the teachings of Christ, second, to expose and educate audiences to concerts, musicals, and children’s programs, and third, to provide training to all volunteers in the fields of ministering, acting, technical aspects, lighting, costuming, food preparation, and animal husbandry.
Our Background:Founder Frank Roughton Harvey was a pioneer in Christian drama. Starting in theater and then being called to the ministry in 1959, he was inspired to combine the two. For his Master’s and Doctorate Thesis, Reverend Harvey wrote a script and constructed a model envisioning how the set was to be built for his passion play. In 1968 at the height of the Civil Rights era he was presented with the opportunity to produce his passion play at the Atlanta Stadium under its original name, “Behold the Man”. Moving to Ohio, Reverend Harvey’s wife, Hazel, pointed out that the farm they had just purchased had a natural amphitheater and would be the perfect place to present his drama. In 1975, with the help of several ministers and businessmen in the area, of which all were volunteers, the first phase of the set was constructed. In the late summer of 1975 the first performance was presented to an audience of more than 1000. In 1977 the Articles of Incorporation were filed. Today the drama continues to grow with the dedication of all the cast and crew continuing to volunteer. Since The Living Word Outdoor Dramas inception, over 400,000 audience members, from all corners of the United States and beyond, have enjoyed wholesome family entertainment, but more importantly, have heard His word and experienced His triumphant victory!
Currently: Our educational offering is first, to present the life of Christ, second, to expose and educate audiences to the arts including dramas, concerts, musicals and children’s programs, and third, to provide free training to all our volunteers in the fields of acting, technical aspects, lighting, costuming, food preparation, sales, and animal husbandry. All programs and productions are produced at the Living Word Amphitheater in Cambridge, Ohio. The Living Word Outdoor Drama is a non-profit 501 (3) (c) organization.
Funding: Due to our religious status, we are not eligible for most funding programs. Our fundraising efforts are centered on operating funds, facility upgrades and improvements, and continued efforts to educate volunteers all from individuals, corporations and foundations.
